Notes
- Some masculine nouns have different plural forms depending on their meanings:
- сын → сыновья́ (sons): This is the most common plural form of сын (son). It is used to refer to someone's actual sons in a personal or familial sense.
- сын → сыны́ (sons): This form is more archaic or literary. It is often used in an abstract, formal, or symbolic sense, such as referring to "sons" in a collective or metaphorical context (e.g., sons of a nation, faith, or land). In modern Russian, сыновья́ is much more common, while сыны́ is reserved for elevated or poetic language.
- муж → мужья́ (husbands): This is the regular plural form of муж (husband). It refers specifically to married men in the context of their relationship as husbands.
- муж → мужи́ (husbands): This form is used in a more elevated, formal, or symbolic sense. It refers to "men" in the sense of distinguished or notable individuals, often leaders, statesmen, or wise men. In modern Russian, мужья́ is used for familial or domestic contexts, while мужи́ is used in formal, abstract, or honorific contexts.
