6.1.2.1. Nominal sentences
What is a Nominal Sentence?
  • A nominal sentence, or equational sentence, is a sentence that consists of a subject and a predicate without an explicit verb, often relying on context or grammatical structure to convey the verb "to be." This construction is common in present-tense statements, as Russian typically omits the verb "to be" (быть) in the present tense. The meaning is expressed through the relationship between the subject and predicate, which can be nouns, pronouns, or adjectives.
  • In Russian, both the subject and the predicate of a present tense sentence are in the nominative case.
  • A dash (—) can replace "to be" in the present tense
