6.8. Class VIII Verbs - Present & Simple Future Tense

OVERVIEW

Identification
- Class VII verbs:
  - End in -чь: бере́чь (to protect)
Conjugation
- Class VIII verbs are conjugated by dropping -чь:
  - бере́-(чь), те-(чь), мо-(чь), ле-(чь), толо́-(чь), стри-(чь)
- The personal endings are then added, often after a consonant alternation:

бере́чь (to protect)
- бере́-(чь)
  - -у: я берегу́ (I protect)
  - -ёшь: ты бережёшь (you protect)
  - -ёт: он/она́/оно́ бережёт (he/she/it protects)
  - -ём: мы бережём (we protect)
  - -ёте: вы бережёте (you protect)
  - -ут: они́ берегу́т (they protect)

Peculiarities of Class VIII verbs
- Consonant alteration is common
  - сечь (to chop) → я секу́ (I am chopping)
  - жечь (to burn) → ты жжёшь (you burn)
  - впрячь (to harness [to]) → он впряжёт (he will harness)
  - извле́чь (to extract) → они́ извлеку́т (they will extract)
- However, not all Class VIII verbs have consonant alteration:
  - печь (to bake) → вы печёте (you bake)
  - наре́чь (to name) → мы наречём (we will name)
